Goose Call Opinions from the Forum

"If you're used to blowing a flute-style goose call, it's going to be a little frustrating in the beginning. It took me awhile to get the hang of it, but now I'll never blow a flute goose call again. Short reed goose calls are generally quicker, easier to blow, and normally just more "goosey". It might help to just try to forget everything you learned on a flute, it'll make this easier."
"Everyone will approach a beginner differently, but in my opinion...the first thing you need to learn on blowing short reed goose calls is how to use your throat. Unlike a flute, where you your airflow goes from the bottom of the longs and straight out the call...short reed goose calls needs air regulation. I tighten up my throat a bit, and I force air through the tightness of my throat. This way, I can put out the right amount of air into a note...whether it would be a quick cluck or a moan. This is what will take the longest for an average user to learn. Once you get the hang of that, you can mix up your hand positions with your throat to make a lot of variations of each pitch."

A few tips to consider when making your attempts to learn to blow a goose call is to keep in mind what your tongue is doing also. If you're tongue is at the bottom of your mouth, you’re letting all the air through unrestricted. If you’re tongue is at the roof of your mouth, you can pretty much stop all air if you wanted to. This might be a weird analogy, but how your throat and tongue works while blowing a short reed goose call is kind of like driving a manual transmission. You need to keep a balance between the two to make it work. If you don’t like to constrict the air from your throat…try doing it more with your tongue and vice versa. I’ll always stress that there’s really no right way to blow a goose call, as there’s many ways to make it sound the same. This takes practice but it’ll come natural.

If you're looking into buying your first goose call, then you should consider with a lower end short reed goose call. There's no telling if that first goose call will be right for you, it will come with practice. After you're comfortable blowing goose calls, the decision of which goose call to buy next will be easy.
